History of Ireland

The island of Ireland is a landlocked country that is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. It is bordered by the Republic of Ireland to the south, England to the west and north, Scotland to the northeast and Wales to the east. The island is also a member of the European Union. The capital of Ireland is Dublin and the largest city is Belfast. The Irish language is widely spoken in the country.

Ireland was inhabited for more than 6,000 years before the arrival of the Celts. In the 5th century B.C., Ireland was conquered by the Romans. The Vikings invaded Ireland in the 8th century and established settlements. In 1169, the Normans arrived in Ireland and became the dominant power in the country.

In the 16th century, Ireland became a battleground for the Protestant and Catholic forces. In the 17th century, Ireland was divided into two countries. One part was controlled by the Protestant forces and the other part was controlled by the Catholic forces. In the 19th century, Ireland was divided again into two countries. The northern part was controlled by the British Empire and the southern part was controlled by the United Kingdom.

After World War II, the Irish Free State was created from the northern part of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland was created from the southern part of Ireland. The Irish Free State joined the Commonwealth of Nations in 1949. The Republic of Ireland joined the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973. In 1993, the Republic of Ireland joined the European Union.
