A Brief History of Ireland

The history of Ireland has been marked by several periods of colonization, including the Romans and the Vikings. In the early years of the 6th century, St. Patrick founded a church at Armagh and converted many Irish to Christianity. The Normans invaded Ireland in 1169 and began to build castles and other buildings. The English later conquered Ireland and made it part of the British Empire. The Irish Rebellion of 1798 was an uprising against British rule that was led by the United Irishmen. The rebellion was unsuccessful but was followed by the Act of Union which united Ireland with Great Britain.

The civil war known as the Troubles took place between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland from 1969 to 1998. In 2001, Ireland joined the European Union.

Other famous Irish musicians include Enya, U2, Van Morrison, and Sinéad O'Connor. Irish writers include William Butler Yeats, James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett. The island of Ireland is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It is also home to some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the world. Dublin is the capital of Ireland.

There are more than 4 million people living in Ireland. The country's official language is English, although the majority of the population speaks Gaelic. The Irish language is a member of the Indo-European family of languages. There are approximately 5 million speakers of the Irish language in Ireland.
