Irish History - The Gaelic People

In Ireland, the Irish are known as "The Gaelic people". The term 'Gaelic' comes from the ancient Celtic language of Ireland. The word 'Celtic' is used to refer to the whole of the Celts, who were a branch of the Indo-European family of languages. The term 'Gaelic', however, is often restricted to the language spoken in Ireland, or more specifically to the Irish language.

Ireland was first inhabited by the Celts, who arrived from Asia Minor sometime during the Bronze Age (c. 1200 BC). By the end of the Bronze Age, the Celts had spread throughout Europe and into Britain. In the Iron Age (c. 500 BC), the Celts conquered most of Europe. During this time, Ireland was ruled by the Tuatha de Danann, a group of Celtic gods and goddesses.

During the 5th century AD, the Romans invaded Ireland. The Roman army occupied Ireland for several centuries until the country became independent in the 9th century. The Anglo-Normans invaded Ireland in 1169. They brought with them a new form of Christianity and English law.

The Normans were defeated by the Irish in 1171. The Irish declared independence from England in 1290, but they were defeated by King Edward I of England in 1296.

In the 16th century, the Irish rebelled against English rule again. The Irish fought a war with England, which lasted until 1598. The English won the war and executed many of the Irish leaders. In the 17th century, the English tried to assimilate the Irish into their culture. This was unsuccessful, so they imposed harsher laws and taxes on the Irish.

By the mid-17th century, the Irish began to rebel against English rule again. The English responded by sending an army to Ireland to suppress the rebellion. This led to the Irish Rebellion of 1641. The Irish lost this rebellion and were forced to accept English rule.

In the 18th century, Ireland was divided into two countries: Ireland proper and Ulster. The Irish were not allowed to own property outside of Ireland. Many Irish emigrated to America and Canada. In the 19th century, Ireland gained its independence from Great Britain in 1922.

Ireland is a country in Western Europe. It has a total area of about 31,000 square miles. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides and by the North Sea on the fourth side. The Irish Sea lies between Ireland and Great Britain. Ireland is also bordered by Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
